There is a wave of relief across Oyo State and Nigeria following the successful rescue of 44 pupils and teachers who were abducted in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026. After spending nearly two months in captivity, the victims have finally regained their freedom through a carefully coordinated security operation involving multiple Nigerian security agencies.
According to a statement issued by the 2 Division, Nigerian Army, the rescue operation was the result of weeks of intelligence gathering, surveillance, and strategic planning. The operation was led by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Major General C.R. Nnebeife, with support from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Amotekun Corps, local hunters, and vigilante groups.
Rather than launching a rushed assault, security operatives reportedly spent over a month identifying the kidnappers' hideouts, dismantling their logistics networks, and arresting several members of the criminal syndicate. These actions placed significant pressure on the group and ultimately resulted in the unconditional release of the abducted pupils and teachers.
The operation was conducted with great caution to ensure the safe rescue of the victims while minimizing harm to innocent lives. Although the mission was successful, the Nigerian Army confirmed that some security personnel sustained casualties during the operation, highlighting the sacrifices made by those on the front lines.
The rescued pupils and teachers are currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital before they are formally reunited with their families through the Oyo State Government.
The Nigerian Army expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, other Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, the Directors-General of the DSS and NIA, Governor Seyi Makinde, and all participating security agencies for their support and coordination throughout the operation.
The Army also thanked Nigerians and members of the media for their patience, support, and confidence in the country's security institutions while urging citizens to remain vigilant and continue providing credible intelligence that will aid ongoing efforts to combat insecurity.
A Moment of Hope
The safe return of these pupils and teachers offers hope to many families affected by insecurity across Nigeria. While much work remains to be done in addressing kidnapping and violent crime, this successful operation demonstrates the importance of intelligence-driven security efforts, inter-agency collaboration, and community support in protecting lives.
As the rescued victims begin their recovery, Nigerians will undoubtedly share in the joy of their families while remembering the sacrifices of the security personnel who made the operation possible.
We wish the rescued pupils and teachers a speedy recovery and hope they are reunited with their loved ones as soon as possible.
