Abuja, Nigeria
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has initiated a transformative phase in Nigeria's infrastructure development, approving critical projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, boosting economic growth, and ensuring long-term sustainability. These approvals, announced by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, mark significant milestones in the Federal Government's commitment to national renewal.
Major Road and Highway Developments
President Tinubu has authorized the comprehensive
reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway using
reinforced concrete pavement. This strategic decision follows the premature
deterioration of sections of the recently rehabilitated road. The new concrete
pavement is engineered for exceptional durability, with an expected lifespan of
50 to 100 years, significantly reducing maintenance requirements.
Furthermore, the ambitious Fourth Legacy Highway will be extended by an additional 400 kilometers, bringing its total length to approximately 1,100 kilometers. This extension will now reach Taraba State, substantially strengthening transport links between Nigeria's North-Central and North-East regions.
Other key road infrastructure approvals include:
•
The completion of the long-abandoned Ibi Bridge project.
•
The construction of the 5.76-kilometer Lau Bridge in Taraba State.
• The dualization of an additional 400 kilometers of the East-West Road, a move expected to significantly improve safety, trade, and regional connectivity.
Minister Umahi also confirmed that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has been officially named the "President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway," recognizing the President's enduring vision for this vital project. Construction is progressing rapidly across several sections, with the first phase in Lagos nearing completion, and work advancing in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, and Ondo states. Updates were also provided on the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway and the Trans-Sahara Highway, both poised to enhance regional connectivity, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic development nationwide.
Broader Infrastructure Achievements Under the Tinubu
Administration
Beyond road networks, the Tinubu administration has made significant strides across various infrastructure sectors:
Aviation Sector
In a move to modernize air travel and enhance safety, President Tinubu approved N712.3 billion for the comprehensive upgrade of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos [1] [2]. This initiative is part of a broader effort that includes the rehabilitation and expansion of terminals at other major international airports, such as Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu [3]. These upgrades encompass critical infrastructure like CAT 2 LED airfield lighting systems, ensuring improved operational efficiency and passenger experience [4].
Housing Initiatives
The administration's commitment to providing affordable housing is evident through the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates program. This ambitious scheme aims to deliver a total of 50,000 housing units across Nigeria in its first phase, with sites planned to feature 1,000 housing units each [5]. Significant progress has been reported, with Phase One of the Renewed Hope City in Karsana, Abuja, nearing completion [6]. The Federal Government has also launched an online portal to streamline the process of purchasing homes under this scheme [7].
Water Resources and Sanitation
Efforts to improve water supply and irrigation have also seen substantial progress. The administration has focused on key projects, including the Bakolori Irrigation Project [8]. Major dam projects are advancing, with the Mangu Dam 90% completed, Adada Dam 78%, and Ogbesse Dam 65% [9]. In 2024 alone, 113 contracts for water supply schemes were awarded nationwide, with four major projects currently underway in Jigawa and Benue States [10].
These comprehensive infrastructure investments underscore
President Tinubu's strategic vision for a more connected, prosperous, and
sustainable Nigeria.
